1, 2, 3 - Grab and Go Green Smoothie Recipe

One of my biggest tips for anyone who wants to embark upon a healthier lifestyle is to step one - prepare. I personally get nothing done if I don't prepare for it and I believe that one of the easiest ways to be healthy is to prepare everything in advance. From meal planning, to meal prep, to scheduling your workouts, once you get that sorted the rest will be a doddle. I used my NutriBullet non-stop last year when I first got it for Christmas 2014, however soon saw lots of fresh food go to waste as I'd buy big bags of kale/spinach/fruit etc for smoothies but would never be in 'the mood' for a smoothie some days, and would find wilting spinach in the fridge a week later. And wilting fruits and vegetables does not make a delicious and nutritious smoothie!

Towards the end of last summer, I thought up the 'ingenious' idea to bag up smoothie ingredients, chuck them into the freezer and whenever I craved a smoothie, I could just empty the frozen ingredients into my NutriBullet and whizz together with some water. Perfect green smoothie in 1, 2, 3.

Grab some leafy greens, maybe an avocado or two, some low GI fruits, a small bunch of bananas and some freezer bags. Wash your greens, chop up your fruit and bung it all into a bag. When it comes to making your smoothie, feel free to add any superfoods such as chia seeds, flax seeds, chlorella, spiralling, lucuma etc. You'll just need to top up with water, or coconut water or almond milk if you fancy.

My favourite smoothie combination consists of...

  • A handful of spinach
  • A thumb sized piece of cucumber, quartered
  • Half a small banana, chopped
  • A few cubes of pineapple
  • A small handful of flat leaf parsley
Freeze, and when you fancy it, add in a tablespoon of chia seeds and top with water. This makes a seriously refreshing, filling smoothie. Because the ingredients are frozen, it makes a thicker consistency so if you fancy you could make a smoothie bowl and top with homemade granola, chopped nuts and fresh fruit too. Perfect for those cold mornings when you can't face preparing any ingredients for breakfast. Prepare, freeze, blitz and go!
