Getting the Summer Glow

Lets face it, one of our favourite things about going on holiday is returning with a gorgeous, golden, glowing tan. Am I right? Sometimes there's no better compliment than when everyone and their dog mentions "how brown you look!" upon your return. All the while, you furiously apply after sun and tan accelerator every day, refusing to shave your legs in fear you'll shave away your tan.
Of course, it must be mentioned that to 'achieve' such a golden summer glow, you must do so safely. Which means applying plenty of sun cream throughout your holiday and not spending too long in the sun, especially at peak sun times throughout the day (11am-3pm). A golden tan may look great, but sun spots and worse, skin cancer years later does not look good.

The best way to achieve a gorgeous summer glow, however, is simply by faking it. Long gone are the days of stinky fake tan that would leave you with dodgy streak marks, your bed sheets covered in orange stripes and your dog licking your shoulders because they smell like biscuits.

Whether you're heading off somewhere sunny soon, whether you've just come back, or whether you're planning on staying at home this summer and still want a piece of the sun, here's my selection of products that you need in your life to get the summer glow...

Clarins Radiance Plus Golden Glow Booster
I'm not a particularly big fake tanner, usually I coat myself in the Dove Gradual Tanner (Medium-Dark as it gives a gorgeous build able glow - the lighter shade is seriously orange. You're welcome) and if I'm feeling really brave, you can never go wrong with St Tropez. This tanning oil from Clarins is a dream come true for anyone who wants a gorgeous summer glow. Add approximately 4-6 drops per body part to your favourite body lotion, mix and apply. No scent, no streaks, seriously easy to use. No other tanning product stands a chance.

Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Illuminating Powder Gelée
This. THIS. It's basically heaven in a compact. Imagine you're on a two week paradise trip to the Maldives - it's the evening, the sun is beginning to set, you've got the most gorgeous deep set tan you've ever had and you apply these shimmering waves to your cheekbones, décolletage and temples. Your skin is luminous. This is just gorgeous. It's a little tricky when used on paste-y un-sunkissed British skin as you have to really build it up to achieve the desired effect but I've no doubt this will look gorgeous when I jet off on holiday in a few weeks. This is Limited Edition too, so need I say anymore?

Toni & Guy Casual Radiating Tropical Elixir
Of course, a summer glow doesn't just mean skin - this delicious smelling serum from Toni & Guy guarantees no more frazzled hair from lounging in the sun all day. Just a pump or two of this through the lengths and ends of the hair adds a gorgeous sheen and really nourishes the hair, leaving it feel slinky and shiny, and will no doubt help you to achieve gorgeous, glowing, sun kissed locks.

L'Oreal Casting Sunkiss Jelly
I have a confession to make. I got my hair all chopped off several weeks ago, which was much needed and my hair looks so much healthier too. What did happen though is a lot of my naturally balayage-ed/ombré-ed blonde hair disappeared. Cue everyone I know asking if I'd dyed my hair brown. I couldn't wait for my hair to naturally go blonder again in the summer sun so decided to try out the L'Oreal Casting Sunkiss jelly. I started with the darkest shade and have started working on my second bottle of shade two. This is truly fantastic and has very subtly but naturally given my hair that enviable sun kissed look. The best part is it hasn't dried my hair out either. I really ought to have taken before and after pictures but trust me on this, it really works.

Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3 is one of the most difficult vitamins for us to ingest, and one we're all mostly lacking. The best way to get it is from the sun yet we need to stay protected from the sun to avoid damage. Skin safety must come first when exposing oneself to sunlight, however vitamin D is essential for good health, therefore a supplement is your best bet. Of course, a diet rich in oily fish and eggs will certainly help with your Vitamin D levels but you're most likely to easily ingest it by taking a good supplement.

What are your favourite ways to get a summer glow? Have you tried any of these products? Do you have any recommendations? Let me know if you're heading off on holiday this summer too! I'd love to hear from you, as always.

  4. Great post! I've grown up on the French Riviera and I have always been very cautious to protect my skin from the sun. I'm glad more and more people now protect their hair too - it's just as important as your skin!
