Beauty: Best of the Bases

Confession time: I'm a bit of a foundation whore. I'm aware, that's not the nicest of terms however I'm honestly just completely, utterly obsessed with finding a beautiful base to my make-up. I suppose it's not surprising given my blemish prone and general mess skin I've been trying to conceal over the past 12-13 years. Usually I'm very good and do lots of research and stumble upon a foundation that is perfect for my skin and stick at that one base for months and months until I'm bored of repurchasing. For whatever reason, since the middle-end of January I've been snapping up any which foundation I can. Some have been great, some have been so-so. Here's a round up of what's been working its magic on my complexion...

Liz Earle Signature Foundation - This was the first of the foundations that sent me on a frenzy. This is one I'd been eager to try for quite some time, especially after Kate raved about it for so long (she's my Queen when it comes to all things beauty related and knows how to suck me in a spend). It suggests it's suitable for all skin types, neither leaving a matte or dewy finish; just a natural, skin like coverage. I'm still trying to put my finger on the scent of this, it's sort of nostalgic, slightly Parma Violets-esque, slightly rosy. Je ne sais pas. Now, the colour UPON APPLICATION is perfect. Then it starts to oxidise. At first I thought I'd just applied too much. Oh no, I really was looking orange. I kept buffing and buffing until I simply looked like I had a post holiday glow but I did feel slightly disheartened. This is in shade 2, Ivory so it seems the lightest shade would have been more suitable. However, if you have very fair skin or even pale skin, I'd advise you to steer clear. I'll most certainly come back to this if I'm slapping on the Dove Summer Glow or if I get uber tanned as it has a lovely finish and wears really well on the skin. It blurs imperfections and has a good medium coverage too.

NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation - Now, this one I purchased seconds after midnight upon it's release having done tonnes of research and having watched just about every YouTube review of the foundation possible. Medium-full coverage, lightweight, matte yet luminous? Oh my, I'm yours! This sounded perfect for me, especially as I'm such a huge fan of these new ultra lightweight formulas that give great coverage such as the incredible YSL Fusion Ink. I'd also recently been colour matched again to the Sheer Glow in the shade Mont Blanc, though reviews for this foundation said to go one shade up due to the formulation. So, up to Deauville I went. Cue wrong foundation shade number two. D'oh! I'm gutted! And considering the price tag I most certainly won't repurchase any time soon in a more suitable shade. It's a bit too yellow for my skin, thus making ym complexion slightly chalky. Oh and fyi, the 'one pump covers all' claim is a load of poo. Unless you have pretty great skin anyway, I need about three. It's still a nice foundation but I'd have a very different opinion if the shade was more suitable. This is also one to wear with a good primer, in particular a pore perfecting primer as this creates pores without one.

Maybelline Dream Flawless Nude - This should still be on an introductory offer at Boots for £5.99 which is a total bargain for a foundation, just to let you know. This is definitely my favourite of the three. As I've already mentioned, YSL's Fusion Ink foundation is my ultimate base and due to many of the 'drugstore' brands being under the same umbrella as the higher end brands, I'm fairly sure this is probably made in the same factory as the YSL foundation. It has a similar wand that you swipe on the back of your hand for you to then apply the seriously lightweight formula onto the face. This has a medium, buildable coverage that is just a dream to apply. It covers imperfections very well and just makes the skin look luscious and healthy. Avoid if you have very dry skin as this will cling to dry patches but for combination, oily skin, this will give you great skin in a bottle. Just make sure you give it a good shake!

There'll most likely be a video coming your way to accompany these products, plus quite a few more. Just bare with me - my mind and world is a bit mad right now, I hope you understand!

Have you tried any of these products? Let me know your current favourite foundation in the comments....

    1. They can get a little messy and I do think they're kind of a gimmick (oh hey YSL Fusion Ink with your 'fountain pen' style applicator) but I love the finish of the YSL foundation and am really enjoying the Maybelline one. Though I sort of don't know how else they'd package them I suppose as I reckon a pump would spray the product everywhere...?
They're very different sort of foundations, lets just say that!

    1. Ooh I haven't tried the Urban Decay foundation though I've heard the matching concealer is great and very similar to the ridiculously hard to find NARS radiant concealer. I'm also keen on trying a Tarte foundation soon too! Good recommendations! xx
