Maze Grill, London

Recently for James' birthday I decided to treat him to a weekend away in London. Staying in Earl's Court, we were only ever a short tube trip to whichever destination we fancied.

James wanted to catch the Michael Jackson musical Thriller on the Saturday that we arrived, and as an avid Chelsea supporter, he persuaded me to come along to the Chelsea football club tour at Stamford Bridge in Fulham on the Sunday. I can't even begin to tell you how lost I felt!

Nonetheless, I chose to splash out and wine and dine him at Gordon Ramsay's steak restaurant, Maze Grill on the Saturday evening. As he loves anything and everything to do with Ramsay, plus can happily a devour a steak any day of the week, it seemed like a match made in heaven.
Having visited five years previously (!) for my Dad's birthday, I knew how much of a treat he was in for. Keeping the reservation secret for approximately 3-4 months was hard! However the look on his face when I told him the surprise and when we stepped into the restaurant was well worth the wait.

Situated in Grosvenor Square, Maze is the sort of place you can picture the rich and famous strolling into unannounced and the staff clearing space to fit them in. However if you don't fit that description, book well in advance as we turned up (having booked months in advance) at 8.30pm to see the restaurant packed. Once your reservation begins, you have two hours and then you're out of there.

It's one of those fancy, modern restaurants where the wine list is provided on an iPad. Scrolling through the list, my eyes lit up, whispering under my breath "James... as much as I love you I don't think I can splurge £500 on a bottle of wine....". Laughing, he whisked the iPad out of my hands and found a delicious French wine for only a fraction of the price I had previously seen. Phew!

Having gazed over the menu, struggling to choose from the lavish selection that Maze had to offer we eventually settled on two medium-rare Aberdeen Angus sirloins.
To whet our appetite we also chose the antipasti platter to share, with a delectable selection of smokey and sweet meats, fresh mozzarella and sundered tomatoes and olives (which James pinched most of - olive thief).

The service at Maze is fantastic. The waiters are constantly on hand to fill your glass up, keeping the bottle away from the table and chilled elsewhere. A great idea - considering how close the tables were together, there's nothing more irritating than a fancy yet oversized wine cooler plopped next to your table. They were constantly checking that everything was perfect, were friendly and went out of their way to make the meal enjoyable.

Then came the main event - the steaks

Arriving on a wooden board with half a bulb of garlic alongside, the steaks glistened at us "tuck in!". Licking my lips and squeezing over a clove of garlic all over the steak, taking my first bite was like heaven. It was melt in the mouth steak and James and I both mumbled at each other "bessteakevermmm". Juicy, tender, smokey and bursting with flavour it was incredible.

We chose some French fries, roasted sweet potato and Mac'n'Cheese, alongside a BĂ©arnaise sauce for myself and Chipotle BBQ for James. The sweet potato was better smooth with bursts of red hot chilli; and even as not much of a chip lover, the fries were perfectly cooked. However the real star of the mains was the Mac'n'Cheese. With soft and light toasted breadcrumbs sprinkled on the top, delving into the gooey, creamy concoction, we were both fighting with our knives over the pot.

With our bellies full, we both sat back and had to shoo away the dessert menus the waiters tried to ply on us. Earlier in the evening when asked why we were visiting we mentioned how it was James's birthday. Having already seen three other parties presented with a lavish birthday dessert, aflame with birthday candles with the waiters singing them a happy birthday, it actually came to a massive surprise when suddenly a chorus of waiters circled in on us, presenting James with a birthday brownie! His eyes lit up and I had to swear to him I knew nothing about it!

Bedazzled with fruity, soft swirls, fresh, crunchy meringue and juicy pieces of strawberry was a dense, nutty yet gooey brownie with a white chocolate 'Happy Birthday' message. I still don't quite know where James put all f that after our dinner...

After emptying the contents of my purse, the Maitre'd offered us to meet the Chefs in the kitchen before we left. We entered the blazing kitchen and were shown how they prepare the steaks to then cooking them on an indoor barbecue (must get myself one of those...) and the importance of resting the meats, plus meeting the chefs who couldn't be prouder to show us around their kitchen.

So, with full bellies it was time to take a slow stroll around London to find somewhere quiet for a few drinks which, believe me, in London on a Saturday night and in the centre is rather difficult! Any recommendations for the next time we come to London would be much appreciated!

Neither of us could be happier with our meal at Maze Grill, we would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fabulous steak experience.
